Cold, Flu, & Respiratory Season: Tips for Managing ER Visits with Kids

February 10, 2025

As temperatures drop and germs continue to spread, many parents find themselves navigating the challenges of cold, flu, and respiratory season. For some families, these illnesses may result in an emergency room (ER) visit. To help ease the experience, Colorful Hearts LLC offers these practical tips to prepare for an ER visit, manage expectations, and make the process smoother for you and your child.

What to Bring to the ER

Packing the right items can make a big difference during an ER visit. Consider including:

  • Comfort Items: Bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal, blanket, or toy for reassurance.
  • Entertainment: A fully charged phone or tablet, headphones, and an extra charger can help pass the time during waits.
  • Essentials: Pack pajamas, extra clothes, and a water bottle. These small comforts can help normalize the experience.
  • Snacks: Check with hospital staff before feeding your child, but having small snacks can help you and your child stay calm and focused.

Managing Expectations

The ER can be a stressful environment, but preparing your child and yourself for what to expect can reduce anxiety:

  • Honesty is Key: Explain to your child where you are going and why. Use simple language such as, “We’re going to the hospital so the doctors can help you feel better.”
  • Expect Wait Times: ER visits often involve waiting. Acknowledge this with your child and provide distractions like coloring books, puzzles, or stories.
  • Teamwork: Reassure your child that the doctors, nurses, and staff are there to help them feel better.

During Treatment

Helping your child feel calm and supported during treatment is critical:

  • Normalize the Experience: Use child-friendly explanations for medical procedures. For example, describe a nasal swab as “a quick peek inside your nose to see which germs might be making you feel sick.”
  • Ask for a Child Life Specialist: Many pediatric emergency rooms have child life specialists on staff. These trained professionals help children and families cope with the stress of medical visits using play, education, and emotional support. If your child is feeling nervous or overwhelmed, don’t hesitate to ask for their assistance!
  • Coping Tools: Bring familiar items like stuffed animals or bubbles to help your child cope with discomfort.
  • Involvement: If appropriate, let your child ask questions and participate in their care. This can empower them and reduce fear.

After your ER Visit

Once treatment is complete, take steps to help your child recover emotionally and physically:

  • Follow-Up Care: Ensure you understand the discharge instructions and any next steps for your child’s care.
  • Celebrate Bravery: A small treat, sticker, or bravery certificate can reinforce your child’s resilience and courage.
  • Talk About It: Encourage your child to share their feelings about the experience. This can help them process what happened and build confidence for future medical visits.
